QURAN PASSAGE 4

PASSAGE 4 SURA AL SHURA 42: 4-5 [J-12][N-13]

TRANSLATION
BISMILLAH ARREHMAN ARRAHIM
4        To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth: and He
is the most High, most Great.
5        The heavens are almost rent asunder from above them, and the angels celebrate the praises of their Lord, and pray for forgiveness for beings on earth: Behold! Verily Allah is He, the oft-forgiving, the most Merciful.

TEACHINGS
(a)      The theme of this passage is Tauheed. This passage is from Sura Al Shura. Opposite to the idea of Tauheed is Shirk or making partners with Allah which is the worst sin of all. In Ayat 4, Allah says that that everything in the universe belongs to Him. He is the creator and everything will go back to Him.
“His are all things in the heavens and on earth”. (Ayat ul Kursi)
Another theme presented here is that angels love human beings and for our sins, they pray Allah to forgive them. Allah is most merciful towards us because when one feels repentance, Allah forgives our sins. These Ayaat emphasize the gravity of the major sin Shirk.
“Indeed whosoever commits Shirk, Paradise will be forbidden for him
and his destination is Hell and cruel will find no help”.
(Sura Al Maida-72)
Allah is Rehman and Rahim and He forgives even the sin of Shirk in this world. Shirk is such a sin that we may face the anger of Allah.

(b)            These two Ayaat are important in a Muslim’s life today. They teach us the lesson of Tauheed or to believe in oneness of Allah. The concept of Tauheed is the fundamental principle of Islamic faith. Since Allah is the creator and sustainer of our life, He does not like that we should make any partners with Him in any possible way. Shirk is the major crime in the sight of Allah. Allah gets very angry when shirk is committed and we may face any calamity as a result of the anger of Allah. Therefore we must avoid shirk. Another theme of these passages is that Allah is forgiving and merciful. We are human beings and we commit sins. We should never be disappointed of the mercy of Allah and we should always ask forgiveness of Allah. He is always ready to forgive us.
“Then Adam learnt from his Lord words of inspiration, and his Lord
turned towards him for He is oft-returning, most merciful”.
[Al Baqarah-37]
