Reasons of compiling
authentic books on Hadith:
1.
Fake ahadith: Due
to the influence of the Prophet on Muslim community, some people started
fabricating Ahadith in the name of Prophet. They were so clever in their work
that for a common Muslim, it was not easy to recognize a fake hadith and a
genuine Hadith. There was a serious need of making standards which should
distinguish between the genuine Ahadith and the fabricated ones
2.
Until now the
work on Hadith was not fully focused on Hadith. The focus was on Fiqh (Islamic
law). Imam Malik, Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Hanbal and Imam Shafaee worked on Fiqh.
Obviously, Islamic law needed Sunnah and Hadith, therefore they were used
frequently but their books were not the collections of Hadith.
3.
There was no
organized, detailed and comprehensive collection of Hadith and there was need
of such collections.
4.
Dut to conflict
between Banu Hashim and Banu Ummayah, some people tried to take advantage and
fabricated Ahadith in favour of any of the parties.
Work of Bukhari and Muslim
250 AH, Imam bukhari and Imam Muslim
worked in an organized way to distinguish between the genuine Hadith and fake
Hadith. They devised two methods which were recognized by Muslim community and and
in later years developed by other Muslim scholars. These methods were:
1.
Isnad or Chain of
narrators or Chain of transmitters (details in a separate video)
2.
Matn or content
of Hadith (Details in a separate video)
· With the help of Isnad, they collected the data of all
people who narrated a Hadith from the Prophet Mohammad (saw) up to Imam Bukhari
or Imam Muslim.
· They analyzed the data and saw whether the person
narrating a Hadith is reliable or not.
· They also saw what weaknesses were there in the
narration of a Hadith.
· They made standards of which Hadith is to be accepted
and which is to be rejected.
· With the help of Matn, they analyzed the content of
the Hadith.
· They set rules about the content.
Due to these efforts, two great books on
Ahadith were compiled that is Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
