Equality between Men and Women

Q         How far do you think Islam teaches about equality between men and women?
[5-N-07]
The first Ayat of Sura Al Nisa says:
"O people, be careful about your duty to your Lord, who created you from a single being, and created its mate of the same kind and spread from these two, many men and women".
This Ayat shows that men and wemen are equal in their social status. They have equal responsibility to create a family system and bring up children. Women have all rights what men possess. Women are entitled to their share in inheritance. They have a right of education, treated equally, run their finance and many other rights.
However, the responsibilities of two of them are different. Man is responsible to go out of the house and earn for the family. Women are responsible to bring up children in a way that they should be responsible citizens of the society. However Islam stops women to work in places where they cannot protect their honour.

The problem comes up when these responsibilities are neglected. In the West, women tried to become an active part of social and financial life and they mixed up with men to the extent that it created moral and social problems. The rate of divorce, a disturbed family system, illegitimate children and the rate of crime show that women have neglected their natural responsibilities.

At the same time, women's condition in the eastern societies and even in the Muslim countries is against what Islam teaches us. If Muslim men are not following the teachings of Quran and Sunnah about the rights of women, it is not the fault of Islam. The companions of the Prophet (saw) say that during the life of the Prophet (saw), women were getting so many rights that in almost every meeting, they would get something new through the Quranic revelations and the Prophet (saw).
