Hadith 4

TRANSLATION
A man asked the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace): “Do you think that If I perform the obligatory prayers, fast in Ramadan, treat as lawful that which is lawful and treat as forbidden that which is forbidden, and do nothing further, I shall enter paradise?” He said: “yes”.

TEACHINGS
(a)      Five times prayer is obligatory upon Muslims. When a Muslim performs his obligatory prayer, he has done his duty towards Allah. Besides that his other prayers will add reward for him. In the same way, Fasting during the thirty days of Ramadan is obligatory. Besides this all fasting is either optional (Nafil) or compensatory (Qaza).
To be careful about lawful and unlawful is not an easy job because Satan attracts us towards sin. This part of Hadith is very comprehensive and covers the entire Muslim life about right and wrong.
The prophet (saw) answered the man that he would enter into paradise if he follows only obligatory acts but this is not a general principle. In this case the Prophet (saw) gave a special privilege to a particular person but Muslims should also follow the optional prayers and optional fasting because the Prophet (saw) practiced them continuously.

(b)      The Prophet (sw) says:
“Prayers (Salat) is the pillar of religion”.
It means that without prayers the entire building of faith may collapse. Therefore the prophet (saw) emphasized on obligatory prayer. Sura Al Baqarah says:
“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you so that you may learn self-restrain”.
This Ayat shows that leaving obligatory fasting without a genuine reason is a major sin. Allah has defined clearly in the Quran what things are ulawful (haraam). A Muslim should avoid unlawful. In Sura Al Anaam Ayat 120, Allah says:
“And refrain from open sins as well as secret sins.”
A Hadith of the Prophet (sw) says:
"No one eats better food than that which he eats out of the work of his hand”.
