Sura Al Qariah 101-111

Translation

The striking Calamity

What is the Striking Calamity?

And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?

It is the Day when people will be like months, dispersed,

And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.

Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds]

He will be in a pleasant life.

But as for one whose scales are light,

His refuge will be an abyss.

And what can make you know what that is?

It is a fire, intensely hot.

Teachings

Sura Al Qariah is about the Day of Judgment which is Aakhira. It will be the Day when human beings will be given life again and they will be answerable for what they did in the worldly life. Allah will do justice and everyone will be rewarded for what they really deserve. The purpose of the Day of Judgment is to warn us that we should spend our life according to will of Allah so that we should enjoy unending pleasures. Otherwise we will face punishment that we cannot think of.

The sura talks about three stages of the Day of Judgment. First the entire life will come to end, then a new life will be given and we will be accountable to Allah and then either paradise or hell will be rewarded according to our good or bad deeds.

The first stage will start from a massive earth quake. A terrible sound (Soor) will create panic in the world. Allah starts the Sura with such words which show the intensity of the day. Al Qariah means calamity or something that shakes violently. Allah says that you cannot imagine and understand the destruction of that day.

When the earth is shaken to her utmost convulsion.  (Sura Al Zizaal)

On that panicky Day, people will be like moths. Allah gives the example of moths because in rainy days we see moths in large numbers but without any discipline. In the morning, we find them dead. Human beings, like moths, will be running in order to save lives everywhere in total panic but ultimately, they will be dead.

Allah also gives the example of such huge things like mountains which will become dust. They will be like fluffy and colored wool, colored because mountains have different colors. All life will come to its end.

The second stage will start when Allah will give life again to all human beings. Now they will be accountable and answerable to what they such a fire did in their worldly life. Did they follow the way of Allah or they adopted the way of Satan. Allah will have some kind of a scale the meaning of which we cannot understand. This scale will even judge our intentions. Those who had spent lives according to way of Allah will be sent to Paradise (Jannah). It will be a place of unending pleasures and bliss.

Then shall anyone who has done an atom’s weight of good see it! And anyone

who has done an atom’s weight of evil shall see it. (Al Zilzaal)

But the ones whose weight of good deeds will be light, will be sent to Hell (Jahannum). It will be a place of fire that we cannot imagine. Hell will be a very deep pit and Allah calls it ‘Haviya’. Allah says that we cannot understand the life in hell.

Therefore, as Muslim, we should avoid sins and we should try our best to follow the way of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet. Allah is Rehman and Raheem. Insha allah, he will forgive our sins.
