Q         Why was his relationship with his wife Khadija important for him?

[4-J-10]

Khadija (ra) was the first wife of the Prophet (saw). At the time of marriage, Mohammad (saw) was 25 years old and Khadija (ra) was 40. She had three children from her previous husbands. From the Prophet (saw), she had six children; two sons and four daughters. Sons died in a young age.

Khadija (ra) gave Prophet (saw) a moral support when he became the Prophet. After the first revelation, she showed a responsible behaviour and took her husband to a scholar, Warqa, who confirmed the prophethood of Mohammad (saw). During the persecution in Makkah, Khadija (ra) stood bravely behind her husband. She and the children also suffered persecution but she never lost her temper. She provided a peaceful life at home and never complained about her sufferings. She had to leave her house and stay in the hills of Abu Talib for three years. It was a terrible time of boycott in which every single penny was spent. At that time she was more than sixty years. She died in 619 AD, 10th year of prophethood in Makkah when the boycott was over. Prophet (saw) could never forget her in his life in Madina. She made the Prophet (sw) financially free. The Prophet (saw ) invested her wealth and he became prosperous. She called a family meeting in which she gave out her wealth to the disposal of Mohammad (saw) completely.

Q         Write about the life of the Prophet Mohammad’s first wife Khadija.

[10-J-14-2058/12]

Khadija (ra) was the first wife of the Prophet (saw). At the time of marriage, Mohammad (saw) was 25 years old and Khadija (ra) was 40. She had three children from her previous husbands. From the Prophet (saw), she had six children; two sons and four daughters. Sons died in a young age.

Khadija (ra) was a rich widow. She was known as a pious lady in makka. Many prominent Makkans wanted to marry her. Due to good character, she was known as ‘Tahira’, lady of a good character. She heard that Mohammad (sw) was a young but an experienced, honest trader. She sent him to a trade journey and also sent her slave Maisarah along with him. They came back with a large profit and Maisarah also gave a positive report about the character of Mohammad (sw). It may be possible that she sent Mohammad (sw) to one or two more journeys. She offered Mohammad (sw) to marry her. With the permission of elders, the marriage took place. She provided a peaceful atmosphere at home. The couple loved each other.

When the first revelation came to Mohammad (sw), he was very upset. He said to his wife: “I feel as if I will be killed”. Khadija said: “You are a nice person. You help others. No one will kill you” She took him to a scholar Warqa because she was confident that her husband had gone through an extra ordinary experience.

Khadija (ra) suffered persecution in Makkah. At the the time of boycott of Banu Hashim, she spent three years in the hills of Abu Talib in the worst possible financial troubles but she always remained steadfast on her faith. When boycott ended, she was about 62 years old. In 619, she passed away.

Q         Taking two aspects of their relationship, explain how the marriage of the Prophet and Khadija sets a good example for Muslim marriages today?                                                                 [4-J-14]

Aspect 1: She offered her entire wealth to Mahammad (sw). Example is that if a husband needs money, the wife should help him if she can afford it

Aspect 2: She provided a peaceful atmosphere at home. She was much older than the husband and she was much experienced in marital life, yet she did not fight with him in the time of persecution. Example is that in marital life, tough situations come but instead of creating panic and troubles, wives should be patient and try to encourage husbands.
