Passage 1     2:255 Ayat ul Kursi

Translation

1 Choose any two of the following passages from the Qur’an, and:

    (a) briefly explain the main theme(s) in each passage                                               [4]

    (b) briefly explain the importance of these themes in a Muslim’s life today.     [4]

Bismillah Arrehman Arrahim

Allah, there is no god but He, the living, the self-subsisting, Eternal.

No slumber can seize Him nor sleep.

His are all things in the heavens and on earth.

Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permits?

He knows what is before or after or behind them.

Nor shall they compass any of His knowledge except as He wills.

His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the most High, the Supreme.

Teachings

(a)

·        The main theme of this passage is Tauheed or oneness of Allah.

·        A Hadith says that Ayat ul Kursi is the best Ayat of the Quran.

·        It summarizes the attributes of Allah. Oneness of Allah or Tauheed is the fundamental of Islamic faith.

·        It means that Allah is the one who gives us life, death and sustenance.

·                  “So also did we show Abraham the power and the laws of the heavens

and the earth, so that he might have certainty”.            [6:75]

·        Ayat ul Kursi shows us attributes of Allah which human beings do not possess.

·        For example, Allah is alive and he will never face death. Allah is also not dependent on anyone. Allah is beyond human weaknesses like sleeping, slumbering and getting tired. Allah is the actual and real owner of everything of his all creations. Allah is beyond our imagination and comprehension. No one can influence the decisions of Allah, unless Allah himself permits this. His power controls every matter.

·                                                            Sura Al Ikhlas says:

“Say: He is Allah, the one and only. Allah the Eternal, Absolute.

He does not beget, nor is He  begotten. And there is none like Him”.

(b)

·        Tauheed is the main idea of this passage.

·        It is obligatory upon a Muslim to believe in one Allah and His attributes.

·        Tauheed gives us a lot of benefits.

·        It takes us out of the slavery of created things.

·        We ask help only from Allah, and we only depend on Allah in every matter of life.

You we worship and Your aid we seek”.   [Al Fatihah]

·        The Sura teaches us that besides Allah, we should not worship anyone else.

·        In our life we should follow the rules given by Allah and His Prophet Mohammad (sw).

·        Since Allah is the only authority, we should ask help only from Him.

·        We should pray that on the Day of judgment, Prophet (sw) should intercede for our paradise.

·        We should also believe that Allah has the knowledge of past present and future and we should not believe in fortune-telling.

·        Ayat ul Kursi is said to be our protector. In a time of difficulty or fear, recitation of ayat ul Kursi gives us satisfaction and feeling that Allah will protect us.
